Era is a specialist publisher of books for primary schools. Our main publishing focus is literacy. Our books sell in Australia, America and many other overseas markets. 

Era is excited about the possibility of finding new authors, and the nature of our publishing means that we require a diverse range of manuscripts:

Fiction

We most often commission and publish books as a series at junior, middle or upper primary level. Authors work as part of a team and write to a publisher’s brief to make sure that the language level, text type and content correlates with the school curriculum. We do not publish one-off stories for children (you need to find a trade publisher for that).

Nonfiction

Topics, language level and presentation must encourage a range of literacy skills and correlate with the curriculum at that school level.

Teacher Books

We create teacher guides to supplement our fiction and non-fiction literacy series. We do not publish one-off teacher resource books. There are other publishers who specialise in that.

 Student Workbooks

Only a teacher (student or publisher at Era) can truly appreciate the skill required to write a well-structured, stimulating worksheet.

One way Era finds new authors is by receiving unsolicited manuscripts — but we're struggling to keep up. Please help reduce the flow of unsuitable manuscripts by targeting your submission. Browse our website or go to an educational bookshop and check out our books — if your book doesn't seem like a good fit, please don't send it.

When you do submit, please do the following:

• Explain in your cover letter why you think we are the right publisher for you.
• Tell us if you have submitted your book to any other publisher.
• Give us a standard CV and tell us about you as a writer (and a teacher?).
• Include your email address.
• Let us know what your plans are as a writer (we aren't interested in publishing one-off manuscripts, but we are interested in finding authors who have more than one book up their sleeve).
• Give us a synopsis and sample section of your manuscript.
• Refrain from sending valued manuscripts and illustrations – send copies only as we do not return works unless a SAE is supplied.
