Making Reading a Pleasure back home

The levelling criteria for establishing guided reading levels include elements such as repetition, brevity and limited vocabulary. If the focus on the development of texts is meeting these criteria, it often leads to texts that do not truly entertain or inform. They bore children and fail to give them that reward that makes reading purposeful and enticing – pleasure!

The WINGS author and illustrator team includes people of established literary merit – award–winning creators who know how to appeal to young readers. So, even at the simplest reading levels children feel a sense of accomplishment and purpose after reading a book –  then want to read more. This literary merit can be seen in:

  • The development of appealing characters that can be followed in other books
  • The quality and variety of illustration that tells the reader they deserve the best
  • The way each book reaches a natural conclusion on the final page
