Background
As a provider of professional development to literacy teachers all over the world, author Rodney Martin became aware of a fundamental missing link in the teaching and learning of writing in primary-school classrooms.
Curricula changes with a functional approach to grammar and writing skills demanded language knowledge teachers had been denied through insufficient professional development. Grammar textbooks do not offer a truly functional link between language conventions and modern curriculum outcomes in writing.
The author realised that a reference tool he used as a professional editor and author – the style guide – was missing in the classroom.
